Infant teething

From about 12 weeks of age the milk teeth start their descent down to eventually break through the gums, which can cause pain and inflammation as they push through the tissue. Early signs of teething are drooling and wanting to put things in the mouth, and these behaviours can be evident a long time before any physical changes to the gums themselves are noticeable. The irritation and pain of the process can cause fretful behaviour, crying and upset.

Nature’s answer to teething problems

Homeopathic treatment has been found by some parents to be effective at reducing the associated symptoms, teething granules are designed to be easy to give to young babies by simply dissolving in water. As the teeth start to protrude then use a specially designed baby toothpaste to reduce inflammation and calm the situation down.

Mumps and Measles

Both of these illnesses are much less common than they used to be, because of the MMR (Mumps Measles and Rubella) vaccine. However, some parents are now choosing for their children not to have this vaccine because of concerns over side-effects. We cannot give general advice about this confusing subject on this website but suggest consult your GP or a qualified health practitioner to get all the information you need before making a decision.

Mumps

This is an illness caused by the paramyxovirus that usually affects the parotid salivary glands (these are located in front of the ears). In most cases it is a mild illness, but can cause complications in rare cases which is why it is important to identify it and seek treatment. Common symptoms are swelling of the salivary glands (which cannot usually be felt but when infected may be palpable), a dry mouth, fever, tiredness and loss of appetite, sometimes with nausea or abdominal pain. A mumps infection in the first trimester (12 weeks) of pregnancy could potentially increase the risk of miscarriage. Complications from infection can arise if the infection affects other areas such the testicles, or spreads from the salivary glands to the ears or brain. It is uncommon for more than one testicle to be affected, but if both are affected then in rare cases infertility can result. If the ears are affected then hearing can be impaired and if the infection spreads to the brain then a form of meningitis can occur, however this is not usually as serious as other forms of meningitis. However, although serious consequences are rare, it is important to be vigilant and seek advice from the doctor.

Nature’s answer to mumps

A mild case of mumps often requires no treatment apart from rest, drinking lots of fluids is especially important to help with the lack of saliva and a herbal alternative to over the counter anti-inflammatories, such as meadowsweet may help. Immune support is indicated in an outbreak, increase vitamin C consumption and try elderberry syrup or thyme, which may have anti-viral properties.

Measles

Measles is an unpleasant and serious infection of the respiratory system caused by a virus. Symptoms include cold or flu -like symptoms which get progressively worse, sensitivity to light (photophobia) and a greyish / white rash inside the mouth. After a couple of days a rash of brown red spots starts to appear, often beginning around the ears and neck. It is important to consult your doctor if you suspect a measles infection, which is a notifiable disease and very infectious. The doctor will keep an eye out for rare complications, which can include pneumonia or meningitis, but in most cases the immune system will fight off the infection after a period of rest.

Nature’s answer to Measles

Boost immunity if you are affected, or likely to come into contact with someone suffering with measles, even if you have been vaccinated. Thyme, Elderberry and increased Vitamin C may be useful.

German Measles (Rubella)

German measles is not connected to Measles, being caused by a different virus - the Rubella virus. However, the confusion comes from the pinky-red rash that accompanies it. Often this rash is the only symptoms although sometimes sneezing or symptoms similar to a mild cold can be present. The reason that German Measles is a serious concern is because, if caught in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, it can lead to problems in the development of the foetus causing brain, ear or eye problems for the baby or result in miscarriage, which is why it is routinely vaccinated against. Children showing the signs of German Measles should be kept indoors, away from pregnant ladies or those who might conceive soon,  while the rash can be seen.

Nature’s answer to German Measles

As with any infection, drink lots of fluid and rest, to help your body’s immune system concentrate on fighting the virus. Boost immunity with Vitamin C and elderberry.

Nappy Rash

Nappy rash is inflammation of the skin in the nappy area caused by the contents of the nappy causing irritation , chafing and redness. Symptoms are painful, angry looking skin the discomfort of which leads to crying and unsettles behaviour in the child

Nature’s answer to Nappy Rash

Although the most usual cause of the problem is damp skin from a wet nappy, this can be compounded by fungal (Candida) infection or skin problems such as eczema. The first place to start is with keeping the skin dry, by regular nappy changes and a dusting powder designed for the nappy area. Calendula (marigold) extract can calm irritation and also deal with any associated infection so look out for creams and lotions designed with nappy rash treatment in mind which contain soothing anti-inflammatory herbs. If a skin disorder persists then it is worth considering elimination of foods that might be contributing to the problem (lactose intolerance).

Mastitis(Mother)

Mastitis can result from a blocked milk duct, acute mastitis is an infection and swelling of the breast, usually occurring as a result of bacteria entering the nursing mother’s breast through cracks in the nipple.
