Carotenoids
We’ve all heard the Government recommendations on diet- that we should consume 3-5 serving of fruit and vegetables each day for good health. These foods are a rich source of many nutrients, but especially the carotenoids. Some carotenoids convert into retinol, an active form of vitamin A. However, many have significant benefits of their own.
While beta-carotene has received the most attention, research has highlighted the potency of other carotenoids such as Lutein, Astaxanthin, alpha carotene, cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin.
Clinical data indicates that carotenoids aid in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and many other health disorders due to their powerful antioxidant and immune enhancing properties.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in the human retina and may provide protection against age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Astaxanthin is a pinkish-red carotenoid primarily from micro algae that gives salmon and flamingos their characteristic colour. Research suggests it may benefit cardiovascular, prostate, skin and cell health.
Alpha carotene is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from free radical damage. It has been researched for its anti-ageing properties.
Research on Cryptoxanthin suggests that this carotenoid may promote the health of the respiratory tract.
Look for supplements that combine these carotenoids, due to their importance and synergism in achieving optimal health.
Carotenoids act as powerful antioxidants and have many benefits. Astaxanthin has been shown to be 10 times more potent as other common carotenoids in terms of its antioxidant activity. Lutein and zeaxanthin have been researched for their ability to promote good eye health. Alpha carotene has been researched for its anti-ageing properties. Cryptoxanthin has been shown to aid respiratory health.
