Thyroid Health - Nutritional Help
The thyroid gland is situated just below the voice box in the front of the neck. This gland (and the hormones produced by it) is responsible for the regulation of the metabolism of every cell in the body.
An imbalance of thyroid hormones disrupts the functioning of the whole body. Hypothyroidism refers to low function of the thyroid and is one of the most common disorders of this important gland. Symptoms include sensitivity to the cold, elevated cholesterol levels, weight gain and lethargy, headaches, constipation and fertility problems.
Many people are under the impression that supplementing the diet with kelp, a seaweed rich in iodine, offers the best nutritional support for thyroid health. While iodine is vital for the manufacture of thyroid hormones, iodine deficiencies are relatively rare. Furthermore excess iodine may actually impair thyroid function. Studies suggest that iodine supplementation should only be undertaken when prescribed by a GP or healthcare provider.
Minerals, such as zinc and selenium are important for the manufacture of thyroid hormones, but many people are deficient in these nutrients. Taking a daily multivitamin and mineral formula will supply these and other thyroid -supporting nutrients. An additional selenium supplement (up to 200mcg) may also be of benefit.
A balanced, whole food diet and regular exercise are also important to the health of the thyroid.
If you have been diagnosed with an under-active thyroid, nutritional intervention may be of help. Certain foods have been shown to suppress thyroid function. These are known as goitrogens and include brassica vegetables, (such as radishes, turnips, cabbage and broccoli) and soy foods. Cooking these foods inactivates the goitrogens, but these foods should be limited. A balanced diet, rich in unprocessed foods and cold-water fish is recommended. A multivitamin and mineral formula, plus extra selenium has been shown to be supportive to thyroid health. Always consult your GP before taking any nutritional supplements.
